Fluvial processes

The totality of geomorphological processes caused by fluid waters is called fluvial. In a narrow sense, fluvial processes are geomorphological processes associated with the action of watercourses (channel streams) and leading to the development of erosive and accumulative landforms. Sometimes, the term is expanded, referring to fluvial processes and the deluvial process .

Watercourses perform three types of geological work: destruction, transfer of destruction products and their accumulation .

Among the main exogenous processes (according to V. Stetsyuk and I. Kovalchuk), the following processes are associated with the effects of temporary or permanent watercourses [1] :

Process typesDisplay in relief

(typical elementary forms)

Denudationlinear erosionfurrows, ravines, ravines, erosion ledges
lateral erosionmeanders, channel ledges
Accumulativealluvialfloodplains, beaches, braids, rifts, coastal shafts
proluvialloops, drift cones, clay piedmont plains
alluvial-proluvialweakly inclined flat plains
deltalowland plains with fan-like distribution of ducts and sleeves

Landforms

Created by temporary streams

The genetic series of relief forms created by the geological action of temporary watercourses is represented by such forms: erosion groove , ravine , ravine , beam .

Also, the fluvial relief forms include a blow-out cone .
