Daniel Gregory Mason ( born Daniel Gregory Mason ; November 20, 1873 , Brookline , Massachusetts - December 4, 1953 , Greenwich , Connecticut ) is an American composer, musicologist and music teacher. Grandson of Lowell Mason .

He studied at Harvard University with John Knowles Payne , then at the New England Conservatory with Percy Getchius and George Whitefield Chedwick, and finally in Paris with Vincent d'Andy . In 1905 - 1942 he taught composition at Columbia University , from 1929 - professor, in 1929 - 1940 - the head of the music department.
Mason's composer's legacy includes three symphonies, a piano and two string quartets, violin and clarinet sonatas, piano and organ compositions, and songs. Among his books on music are the monographs “ The Chamber Music of Brahms ; 1928 ) and The Beartoven Quartets” ( 1947 ), addressed to the general reader of the book “Beethoven and his predecessors” ( Beethoven and his Forerunners ; 1904 ), The Romantic Composers ( 1906 ), the autobiographical book Music in my Time ( 1938 ), etc.
