Gerania

Geranium [2] , Geranium [3] [4] or Geranei [5] , "Crane Mountain" [6] ( Greek Γεράνεια η Γερανεία [4] ) is a mountain range in Greece in Megarida that separates the Megarian plain from the Corinthian. It is located 60 kilometers west of Athens [7] . The highest peak has a height of 1360 meters [1] , according to other sources 1351 meters [7] . It consists of flysch and limestone [7] .

The eastern part of the ridge belongs to the community of Loutraki-Ayi-Theodori in the periphery of the Peloponnese . Western - to Megara in Attica [7] .

The western part of the ridge is Mount Egiplankt ( Greek Αἰγιπλαγκτος [6] ), the “Mountain Visited by Goats” ends with Cape Ireon (Melangavi) [1] ( Ηραίον η Μελαγκιβι ) in the Gulf of Corinth , on which was located near Lake Vouliagmeni . In the northeast it borders on Mount Pateras . In the east - with the Megar plain. In the southeast, it ends with the rocks of Kakya-Skala (Skyron Rocks), the site of the myths about Skyron and Theseus , where the famous Skyron Road passed in antiquity. In the southwest is the Corinth Isthmus .

The name comes from other Greek. γέρανος - gray crane ( Grus grus ). According to the legend Megar ( Μέγαρος ), the son of Zeus and the Sinid nymphs escaped during the flood at Deucalion on the top of Mount Gerania. The mountain was called the Crane, because Megar swam for flying cranes [8] .

Included in the Natura 2000 network. The Centaurea raphanina ssp cornflower grows here . mixta and astragalus Astragalus hellenicus , snow-white stalk , croup Draba lacaitae , hazel grouse Fritillaria graeca , Gimps Gypsophila nana , viper onion Muscari pulchellum ssp. pulchellum , Scilla reuteri scrub , Silene radicosa ssp. radicosa . A leopard snake , a Balkan tortoise , a fringed land tortoise , an ocular chalcid and a three-lined lizard live [7] .

The mountains are covered with forest mainly from Aleppo pine , in the upper cold part - from cephaline fir . There are thickets of the sacred Vitex and oleander [7] .

The local endemic is the rare Centaurea attica megarensis cornflower . Rare are Stachys spruneri and yarrow Achillea umbellata . Protected species are the European hologlase and the polyxen butterfly [7] .
