Initially, the church was dedicated to St. Christopher , and got its name after a statue of the Madonna and Child was found in the nearby garden ( orto ). The statue, which is credited with miraculous properties, was installed in the temple.
The church was built in the Gothic style, a distinctive feature is the onion dome of the temple. The facade is made of pink bricks and decorated with rich carvings. The carved portal, made at the junction of the Gothic and Renaissance style, is crowned with a statue of St. Christopher.
In November 1966, the church was severely damaged by catastrophic flooding. In addition to the building, the interior of the church was damaged, including Tintoretto's paintings. In the framework of the “Save Venice” program, the church and paintings were restored among the first.
The name of the church is inseparably linked with Tintoretto. The temple is the tomb of the great artist who was a parishioner of this church. Here are a few paintings by the painter, the most noteworthy are two paintings: “The Adoration of the Golden Calf” and “The Last Judgment”.
