Description
The painting was intended for personal use and was ordered by Girolamo Amadi, a representative of a noble family from Lucca , who later settled in Venice , where the family built the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli .
The customer, despite the fact that he is depicted on his knees in front of Saint Jerome , has the same proportions as the saint, which testifies to the establishment of new equal relations between the saints and the believers. In the background are the hills of the Tiber and the hometown of the artist Sansepolkro ; the artist loved to portray the soft relief of the Tuscan land. The picture has undergone serious changes in color: to depict green leaves and the surrounding hills was used copper resins, which oxidized over time, turning into the color of burnt chestnut . On the background of a transparent landscape, figures appear in all their geometric height. An open book on the saint's lap is the motive of Flemish painting, with which the masters of perspective painting competed to show their own skills.
On the trunk of the tree, where the cross is hammered, there is an inscription with the signature of the artist PETRI DE BÛ [R] GO S [AN] Ĉ [T] I SEPULCRI OPUS (“Peter from San Sepolcro work”).
