Description
The painting depicting the Madonna and Child is the first and most famous of the paintings of the early period of the artist. The Gypsy Madonna is so named because of the dark eyes of Madonna and her dark face. The pyramidal arrangement of the figures, independent of the landscape , recalls the works of Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione . In this work, the individual traits of Titian's talent were revealed: an energetic surge of material imagery, extremely subtle gradations of colors that simulate the volume of the objects depicted, and unsurpassed sensuality.
The immaculate triangular arrangement of the Virgin Mary with the baby and the sparse atmosphere of the view behind them come to life thanks to the delicate combination of colors that were mainly borrowed from Giorgione. On this canvas, the artist captured the atmosphere of Venice ; the mountains in the background dissolve into the pure atmosphere, creating an elegant symphony of delicate flowers that perfectly harmonize with the vibrant red, green and white flowers of the lush attire of the Virgin Mary. Titian, unlike his teachers, has an exceptional intuition on the face, which is reflected in the unusual, intense looks of the Madonna-Gypsy and the baby.
The painting was in the collection of the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria from 1659 .
