Story

The film takes place in 2020 in a post-apocalyptic world in which people are almost exterminated by bloodthirsty humanoid monsters. These monsters are completely blind, but have a keen ear, thanks to which, having heard the victim, they quickly overtake and kill her.

A married couple of farmers, Evelyn and Lee Abbott, are struggling to survive in a new environment when you can’t make any sounds: they walk barefoot , at home they only step on squeaky floorboards, and most often use sign language to communicate with each other. The family has three children: daughter Regan, who is deaf from birth, sons Marcus and Bo. It is not always easy for children to understand that it is important not to make noise. Once during a trip to a dilapidated city, where the family stocks up on food and everything necessary, Bo wants to bring a battery-powered toy, a spaceship. His father forbids him to take a toy that can make loud noises, but then Regan gives the ship Bo, which imperceptibly for her, inserts batteries removed by her father. On the way home through the forest, near the bridge, a toy in Bo’s hands begins to make sounds that immediately attract a monster killing and dragging a boy.

It takes a little more than a year. Evelyn is pregnant and is due to give birth soon. Regan still blames himself for the death of his brother and believes that his father is cold to her. Meanwhile, Lee is equipping the basement with soundproofing in the house, where you can talk and where the monsters will not hear the cries of the baby. He is also constantly improving the cochlear implant , which will help Regan gain hearing, but so far she has not been able to hear. One day, Lee goes fishing with Marcus, and Evelyn stays with Regan. Regan wants to leave home and, having collected things, goes to Bo's grave on the bridge. Meanwhile, Evelyn does the laundry and, returning home, feels that her water has gone and fights have begun. Going down to the basement, she steps on a nail and drops the photo frame. The sound of a blow attracts a monster who climbs into the house.

Lee and Marcus are fishing, and the father teaches his son not to be afraid to speak when there are other, louder sounds nearby, such as a waterfall. On the way back they meet an old man whose monsters killed his wife. The old man screams in despair, which attracts the monster that kills him. This delays Lee and Marcus, who return home only in the dark, seeing that Evelyn lit red bulbs near the house, indicating alarm. Lee sends Marcus to launch a salute to distract the monster. Lee himself sneaks into the house, where he finds miraculously escaped the death of Evelyn and the newborn boy. Seeing the salute, Regan runs back to the house, on the road in a cornfield bumping into Marcus. However, monsters walk around and the children climb onto the silo , where Lee usually lights a signal light to find out if there are still survivors in the area. But no more lights are visible. Marcus falls into the tower and nearly drowns in the grain. Regan jumps after him to save him, and soon a monster makes his way there. As the monster draws closer, Regan feels a sound amplifies in her hearing aid, so she can barely stand it. Suddenly the monster runs away.

Meanwhile, Lee sets off in search of children. Evelyn spends some time in a dream, but suddenly realizes that the basement is flooding with water from a pipe apparently damaged by a monster, and in addition one of the monsters is nearby in the basement. She hardly gets out of the basement when the monster escapes to the sounds from the silo. Having got out of the grain and from the tower, the children run to the house, meeting Li on the road, but a monster attacks them. The children climb into the car, and the wounded Lee screams, distracting the monster, and perishes. The children get home and, together with Evelyn and the baby, are hiding in Lee’s workshop. When a monster, hearing the baby’s crying, enters there, Regan realizes that the monsters are adversely affected by ultrasound, amplified by her hearing aid. She brings her device to the microphone and the monster, unable to make a sound, falls, and then Evelyn kills him with a gun. On the surveillance screens, you can see that several more monsters are hurrying to the house, and Evelyn and Regan are getting ready to deal with them.
