History and Etymology

The type specimen was obtained by the British colonial administrator, zoologist and ethnographer Charles Hose in 1891 on Mount Dulit in the north of Sarawak , at an altitude of about 600 m [3] [4] . The species name is given in honor of the German ornithologist Ernst Hartert .

Appearance and structure

This is a large, dark chestnut-brown frog, body length from 32 to 37 cm. Wing length from 220 to 250 mm. On the neck feathers in the form of a narrow collar. There are large white spots on the wings. The belly is paler brown with mountain ash and spots. Sexual dimorphism is not expressed [3] [5] .

The only frogfish of comparable size on Kalimantan is the long-eared frog ( B. auritus ) with which the Harterta frog forms a subspecies [6] . The eared frog is slightly larger (body length 39–42 cm) and paler colored. No other frogfish found on Kalimantan is longer than 30 cm in length [5] .

Voice

The sound of the voice of this species is not known for certain, although Tom Harrison recorded a bird cry to the Kelabi Highlands, which he attributed to this species, which sounds like “tuab tuab” [3] .

Distribution and habitat

The Hartert frog is endemic to the island of Kalimantan. Only eight museum specimens mined on Mount Dulit, the Usun-A-Pau Plateau and the Kelabi Plateau in Sarawak and on Mount Liang Kubung (western Kalimantan) are known. He was also seen near Poring in the Kinabalu National Park in Sabah [3] [5] .

Its natural habitat is a lowland mountain forest, both primary and secondary, at an altitude of 300 to 1500 m above sea level [5] .

Behavior

Very little is known about breeding and food addictions of this species. The female, procured on November 19, was ready to lay eggs [3] . The stomach of the sample mined in the Kelabi Highlands was full of locusts or grasshoppers [3] .

Threats and security

The range of the Hartert frog is estimated at 127,000 km², and it is decreasing. Its range is threatened by destruction due to logging and agricultural development. In the IUCN Red Book, it is designated as a species close to a vulnerable position [7] . Proposed conservation measures include studying the ecology of the species and protecting a suitable habitat [8] .
