Very little is known about Vukol's life. Different sources give different information about the life of Vukol.
According to the anonymous Life of the holy martyr Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna , attributed to Pseudo-Pionius (4th century) ( Bibliotheca Hagiographica Graeca , No. 1561), Vukol was ordained a bishop of the city of Smyrna by the Apostle Paul .
According to the Life in the Minology of Basil II (end of the 10th century) and the Life in Sinaxar of the Church of Constantinople (the 10th century), Vukol is a student of the apostle and evangelist John the Theologian , who made him bishop of the Church of Smyrna. Then Vukol ordained the holy martyr Polycarpus to Smyrna. In the Minology of Basil II and in the Sinaxar of Constantinople, it is said that after the death of Vukol, a myrtle tree grew on his grave, which brought healing from diseases. According to the “Church History” of Eusebius of Caesarea , Polycarp of Smyrna was appointed apostle.
