History
The fire of oil depots in the quarter of San Marcuola (in the Venetian ghetto ) occurred on November 28, 1789 . Guardi, who at the time was 78 years old, went to the site to make full-scale two drawings, one of which is now stored in the Correr Museum in Venice, the other in the Metropolitan Museum in New York . It was from the first draft that the picture was kept, which is stored in the Gallery of the Academy.
Description
The artist depicted the last phase of the fire: the fire spread to neighboring houses with warehouses, highlighted the walls and roofs on which firefighters heroically try to put out the flames. The foreground of the picture is almost all over the horizontal marked with the backs of sympathetic passers-by (the figures of people from the back are made according to the canons of Rococo , at the time when the neoclassical style was already established). Twilight coloring is written in a hot palette of shades of reddish and golden colors that convey the heat of fire. The dynamic brush of the artist with a live brushstroke, transferring to the canvas chaotic gusts of the wall of flame, free and swift. Guardi tried not to draw fire, but to transfer his destructive and all-consuming power.
This is one of the last paintings by Guardi, it refers to the documentary genre to which the artist has already addressed in such works as “Raising the Balloon” and “Celebrating on the occasion of the arrival of the count and Countess of Nord”.
