The painting was made for the chapel of St. Dominica Church of St. Peter the Martyr on the island of Murano in Venice and until 1807 was there; since 1825 it has been preserved in San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice; then she went to Daniele Polacco in Venice, and then to Count Andrássy in Budapest . In 1931 , acquired by the Museum of the History of Art in Vienna with the assistance of friends of the museum.
The painting depicts one of the many miracles attributed to the Dominican saint , probably St. Hyacinth, that is, Jacek Odrovonju (1183 / 85–1257), who saved from the water the monks who fell from the bridge that collapsed during the Dnieper flood. Using an almost impressionistic style, the artist depicted the characters and the desert landscape with decisive brushstrokes. As in his Vedutas , Guardi parted with documentary accuracy, creating a picture outside of time and space, where the figures seemed to have lost their flesh and acquired light vibration. The sky and water extend to connect with each other, and the canvas conveys a sense of infinity.
