It was acquired in Antwerp by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria (1614–1662) from the collection of the Duke of Buckingham for the Prague collection of Emperor Ferdinand III in 1648 . Since 1879 , kept in the Imperial Gallery in Vienna.
Observation of the "natural" truth, mastered thanks to Caravaggio , and absolutely "spiritual" manner of painting, in which color dissolves in the light, are combined in the picture to give credibility to the vision: while traveling, Jacob fell asleep on the way with his dog and saw in a dream angels who go down and up the stairs .
