History
The canvas is the first dedicated miracle performed by the relic - the Holy Cross , which was performed by Bellini for the fraternity of St. John the Evangelist (Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista) in Venice. The artist depicted the procession on St. Mark's Day, when all the fraternities endured their relics.
The plot was based on an episode that occurred on April 25, 1444 , when a merchant from Brescia Jacopo de Salis fell on his knees with prayers for the healing of a dying son in front of the fraternity members who were walking with a relic on St. Mark's Day. This event meant the miracle of “healing at a distance” (the guy recovered), performed by the Holy Cross.
Description
Merchant Jacopo de Salis is depicted in the center of the procession on his knees in front of a canopy and is calling for help to his wounded son. Miraculous healing takes place in the background of the picture. St. Mark's Square is depicted as it was before perestroika at the end of the 16th century : on the right you can see the building of the Orseolo hospital, demolished in the late 1530s during renovation under the direction of Jacopo Sansovino . However, documentary did not become an obstacle to artistic expression, so the artist put the campaign of St. Mark aside so as not to obscure the broad perspective.
The artist’s picturesque language is still associated with the aspirations for narration typical of late Gothic: a composition that is not organized on the basis of the unity of space is devoid of a pronounced center. Bellini aimed to reproduce as accurately as possible the chronicle of events against the background of a carefully captured city landscape.
