He studied at the Vienna Conservatory under Joseph Böhm . In 1858 - 1861 he played in the court orchestra in Weimar , then in the Hanover court orchestra under the direction of Josef Joachim (it is known that in 1865 Joachim resigned from this post in protest against the fact that the royal administration refused to upgrade Grun’s status because for his Jewish origin). Then Grun made a long European tour as a soloist, after which he returned to Vienna and in 1868-1909 played in the Vienna Court Opera orchestra and in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra . Since 1877, also a professor at the Vienna Conservatory. Among Grün's students are Karl Flash , Luigi von Kunitz , Franz Kneisel , Oscar Bak , Hans Wessel, and others.
