History
The cup was organized in 1964 by the Confederation of Sports of Brazil in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of this organization. Four teams were invited to the tournament - the hostess Brazil , the team of Argentina , England and Portugal .
The Brazilians, as masters and world champions brought almost the strongest composition. In particular, the tournament was attended by world champions Zhilmar , Pele , Vava and Mario Zagallo , plus Julinho , who did not go to the world championship due to injury. Also included were future world champions in 1970 - Jairzinho , Gerson , Joel Camargo , Carlos Alberto Torres and Hercules , as well as Rildo , future participant in the 1966 World Cup .
The Argentine national team also had many participants in world championships. Jose Ramos Delgado played in 1958 and 1966, Amadeo Carriso , Alfredo Rojas and Jose Varaka in 1958, Antonio Rattin in 1962, Carmelo Simeone , Luis Artime , Mario Chaldo and Ermindo Onega will play two years later in England, and Roberto Telc at the World Cup 1974 year .
Portugal was mainly represented by a team that in two years would win the bronze medals of the World Cup. Of the 15 people who came to Brazil, 12 will take medals in two years. Among them are the leaders of that team, Eusebio , Jose Torrish , Lukas Vicenti , Jose Augusto , Antoniu Simoins and Mariu Koluna .
England brought its strongest squad. This tournament was part of a test team preparing to host the upcoming world championship, which was to be held in their country. As a result, the future world champions of 1966 played in the competition: Gordon Banks , Jimmy Armfield , George Cohen , Bobby Moore , Ray Wilson , George Eastham , Ron Flowers , Terry Payne , Bobby Charlton , Jimmy Greaves and Roger Hunt , as well as a participant in previous world championships , Maurice Norman and Alan Mullery , future participant in the 1970 World Cup.
The tournament was won by the Argentine national team, which not only once beat the rest of the competition, but also did not miss a single goal. This title was the first for Argentines among all international competitions in which European national teams took part.
