Skating Sports

  Speed Skating

Compared to previous Games, a number of changes have occurred in the speed skating program. Competitions in the mass start were added, where athletes will need to overcome 16 laps, with three intermediate finishes, the points earned on which will help in the distribution of places, starting from the 4th [8] . Also, for the first time since 1994, skaters will run a distance of 500 meters only once [9] . The distribution of quotas was based on the results of the first four stages of the World Cup [10] . Based on their results, a consolidated qualification list was formed [11] , according to which the Japanese team became the owner of 31 Olympic licenses at 13 distances [12] . At the same time, Japan became one of three countries (along with the Netherlands and Canada ), which managed to win all 17 quotas in the women's part of the competition [13] .

  Freestyle

Compared to previous Games, changes have occurred in the halfpipe and slopestyle. Now, in the finals of these disciplines, freestylers began to make three attempts [37] [38] , while the final position of the athletes is still determined by the result of the best of them. Qualification of athletes for participation in the Olympic Games was carried out on the basis of the FIS special qualification rating as of January 21, 2018 [39] . For each discipline, certain conditions were established by fulfilling which athletes could qualify for joining the national team to participate in the Olympic Games [40] . As a result of the qualification selection, the Japanese team won 16 Olympic licenses, but later refused 5 of them [41] .
