Basketball on the water ( Eng. Water basketball ) - a team sports game in the water, during which the athletes of the two teams tend to throw the ball into the opponent’s basket and not miss it in their basket. The game is a mixture of basketball and water polo .
In the Netherlands, water basketball was introduced as a collective sport for the disabled in the late 1970s. In 1982, the first national championship in this sport was held in , in which 22 teams took part. Since 2011, competitions have been held under the auspices of the Kingdom of the Netherlands ( Netherlands. Koninklijke Nederlandse zwembond , KNZB) [1] .
In Slovenia, the rules of water basketball formed in 1997. Before this, two types of basket placement were tested: a classic basketball basket fixed above the edge of the pool, and a floating basket. Both of them turned out to be uncomfortable, therefore, in the final version, a basket was mounted, mounted on a rack a meter above the water [2] . The Slovenian version of water basketball has also gained some popularity in Hungary [3] .
In the Australian state of Tasmania, the first water basketball game took place in September 2003. Teams for him were composed of players in basketball, water polo, football and cricket. Since October 2003, Tasmania began to hold regular basketball competitions on the water [4] .
In 2005, the Italian Basketball Federation recognized basketball on the water as a form of basketball.
