Location
Doinangnon consists of a long ridge located on the western side of the highway between the town of Chiang Rai and the village of Mesai. Most of the ridge is located near the village of Masai, stretching to the west and south-west along the border with Myanmar [1] . The silhouette of a mountain range, when viewed from certain angles, has the shape of a woman with long hair lying on it.
Legend
In Thai folklore there is a legend about how this mountain originated. Once upon a time a beautiful young princess lived here, her lover left her pregnant. Before leaving, he gave her a ring and promised to return. The lady began to wait, but time passed, and her lover did not return. Once a woman decided to look for a husband. She left home to look for him. The woman wandered anxiously through the fields and forests of the neighborhood, but could not find him. However, the lady did not give up; she kept walking and walking until she could walk more because of fatigue.
Then the woman realized that her lover had thrown her [2] . She removed the engagement ring and threw it away. The ring fell into Nongwen (หนอง แหวน), near Machan. The young woman was so exhausted that she lay on her back, resting her head on Mount Doydun. Looking at the sky, she wept bitterly, dying of despair and a broken heart. After her death in the area, the ghost of a woman grew to enormous size. It resembled the shape of a sleeping woman (นาง นอน) with a face looking up. Her belly with an unborn child turned into a nearby Doydun mountain [3] .
Tourism
Tourists on the Doinangnon mountain are best viewed from the area of Machan, the Machan district [4] . Local guides love to joke that Doinangnon will then become the highest mountain in the world, if the “lady” gets to his feet.
In the vicinity of the mountain are a number of caves and water bodies. Some of them are tourist attractions. Among them:
- Thamluang - a cave with numerous stalactites and stalagmites. The lateral branches of this cave are several kilometers from the central one. The cave gained fame in July 2018 because of the rescue operation it conducted .
- Khun Naam Naang Non is a natural body of water into which water flows from rocks. Flowing water, according to legend, is the tears of a lady ghost.
