The Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra ( born Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra ) is an American symphony orchestra based in Cleveland . Founded in 1938 , initially as a youth orchestra (with a strong Cleveland orchestra in the city) on the initiative of three musicians - clarinetist Alfred Zetzer, oboe Robert Zapnik, and cellist Irving Klein, who invited the Western Reserve University professor Karl Grossman to lead the orchestra.
