Biography

Karl Friedrich Gelbke was born March 1, 1842 in St. Petersburg in the family of the writer, composer and teacher (1812-1892).

 

He first studied at the St. Anna's School , which was specially created in the capital of the Russian Empire to educate the children of German settlers, then continued his education at Wittenberg Grammar School. After completing the course at the gymnasium, Friedrich Gelbke entered the Georg-August University in Göttingen , where he was admitted to a student fraternity under the name . After the University of Gottingen, he continued his studies at the University of Berlin , where he received a doctorate in science [1] .

Returning to Russia, F. Gelbke on May 11, 1871 entered the service [2] : he began to teach at St. Anne's School, from where he soon transferred to the Third St. Petersburg Gymnasium .

In the years 1885-1887. He was the district inspector of the St. Petersburg educational district . Since May 10, 1884 - Member of the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of Education [3] ; since January 1, 1888 - current state councilor [2] .

From July 21, 1893 - Director of the Nezhinsky Institute of History and Philology of Prince Bezborodko [4] (until 1907 [5] ).

The most famous contribution to science made by Gelbke is his participation in the translation into Russian of a book by the German classical philologist Friedrich Lübker, “The Real Dictionary of Classical Antiquities for Gymnasiums ” (German: “ Reallexikon des klassischen Altertums für Gymnasien ”). Along with Gelbke, translation was also carried out by: A. D. Weisman , E. A. Werth , L. A. Georgievsky , A. I. Davidenkov, V. A. Kansky , O. Yu. Klimenchich, I. V. Livanov , N V. Rubinsky, I. A. Smirnov, P. V. Nikitin ; all of them, like Gelbke himself, were members of the Society of Classical Philology and Pedagogy .

Friedrich Gelbke was married to a native of Shernberg, Hilda Brehme ( German: Hilda Brehme ), but had no children.

He died on April 2, 1922 in the city of Lippstadt in Germany.
