Zoltan Roznai ( Hungarian. Rozsnyai Zoltán ; January 29, 1926 , Budapest - September 10, 1990 , New York ) - Hungarian - American conductor .

He graduated from the Budapest Conservatory , studied, in particular, with Zoltan Kodai and Bela Bartok . At the age of 24, he became the musical director of the Debrecen Opera. In 1954 he entered the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra as a conductor. After the Hungarian events of 1956, he left Hungary and settled in Vienna , where he became one of the founders and the first chief conductor of the Philharmonia Hungarica orchestra, composed of Hungarian musicians who did not want to return to Hungary after the Hungarian uprising was crushed by Soviet troops.
In 1961 Roznayi moved to the USA and received American citizenship. In 1962 , he became assistant conductor at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (led by Leonard Bernstein ). In 1963 , Roznai headed the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra , in 1964 - the symphony orchestra in Utica . In 1967 - 1971 Roznayi led the San Diego Symphony Orchestra , simultaneously leading the music department at the local university. In 1978 - 1984 Rožnai was the chief conductor of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra .
