| John Constantine wakes up in his London apartment, which is filled with demons like him from the subconscious. the exorcist uses his skills to drive them to where they came from, that is, into his subconscious. He is visited by his friend Chaz Chandler, whom he had not seen for more than ten years. Chaz asks John for help: his daughter Trish fell into a coma, which, as Chaz suspects, is a consequence of dark magic. Konstantin uses Trish magic and realizes that the girl’s aura is corrupted. then he calls the nightmare Nurse, also known as the Healer Asa, and she reveals that Trish has lost her soul. However, the girl is able to communicate through Asa for some time, after which a certain demonic entity takes possession of her and gives John an address in Los Angeles. Constantine and Chaz are sent there, while Asa and Chaz's wife, Renee, remain at Trish's bedside. The healer with the help of magic makes the grieving mother talk about what happened in Newcastle, as John is constantly silent about this. As it turned out, John and Chaz had been best friends since childhood and even became partners. Their mentor, Alex Logu, used his daughter Astra for a dark ritual; Constantine used occultism to summon a real demon. The demon Nergal killed all participants in the ritual, as well as visitors to the nightclub in the basement of which he was passing, after which he took Astra to another world. Having told about this, Rene forgets that she did it. Meanwhile, John again has visions of whispering voices and the exorcist begins to suspect that someone is influencing his mind. He goes with Chaz to the right address, where they are met by an anthroporphic swine butler, who takes them to a pool full of blood and corpses, where the demon took. The latter reveals that the abduction of Trish’s soul was only a ruse to get John Constantine’s attention. in fact, he wants to create his own other world, but he needs Konstantin to eliminate his competitors. | |||||
Production
In January 2017, it became known that after the appearance of the Strela television series in the fourth season, Matt Ryan will again return to the role of John Constantine in the new animated series, while he will continue to appear in the guest role of his character in the television series of the Strela Universe. The CW President Mark Pedowitz admitted that at that time they had no plans about exactly which series Konstantin would appear in, as well as whether other characters of the closed series from NBC would appear on the web series, and whether they would continue his storylines [2] .
Production began at Warner Bros. Studios. Animation and Blue Ribbon Content, the authors of the main concept are Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Goyer (the latter is also the former show runner of the series from NBC). The script for all the episodes was written by John Mark DeMattays, the director's chair was occupied by Doug Murphy [1] . The web series was based on one of the arches of a series of comics about John Constantine - All of his minions [3] . According to vice president of Warner Bros. Peter Girardi's Animation and Blue Ribbon Content project was planned "darker" than the television series from NBC . and much closer to the original Vertigo comics [4] .
Despite the fact that it was stated that “Konstantin: The City of Demons” will be associated with the television series “Konstantin”, both projects are very different from each other both in terms of characters and in terms of plot [5] [3] . According to John Mark DeMattays, the web series is not a continuation of the NBC project, but its events take place in the same universe as in the full-length animated film of 2017, Dark Universe . He also added that “only time will tell whether this show is part of the Arrow Universe [6] . Peter Girardi called the web series part of the "animated universe of Constantine" [7] .
Release
The first five episodes of the web series "Konstantin: Animation" premiered on March 24, 2018 on The CW Seed [1] [8] , immediately after the demonstration to visitors to WonderCon 2018 [9] . Later, screenwriter John Mark DeMattays confirmed that seven more episodes are being prepared for release [10] , as well as the publication on DVD and Blu-Ray of a full-length version of the web series containing 20 minutes of additional scenes [11] . The release of the full-length version on Blu-Ray took place on October 9, 2018 [12] , but on October 4 it was shown to visitors of the 2018 New York comic-con. [13] . The premiere on The CW took place on October 15 under the name "Constantine: The Legend Continues" [14] .
Criticism
Jesse Shedin, writing for IGN , rated the web series 8.1 out of 10 by writing. that the episodes "build a straightforward but fascinating conflict, featuring an insidious magician, and prove that Matt Ryan is the perfect choice for this character, as in a live-action show. and in animation ” [15] .
