Biography

Barry Marshall was born on September 30, 1951 in the city of Kalgoorlie ( Western Australia ). When he was seven years old, his family moved to Perth . Marshall graduated from the University of Western Australia , where he received a bachelor of medicine and surgery in 1975.

In 1979, Marshall began working at the , where in 1981 he met Robin Warren , who was then a senior pathologist at the hospital and had long been interested in Helicobacter pylori. Together they began research on helical bacteria and their connection with gastritis . In 1982, they isolated the primary culture of Helicobacter pylori in a patient and hypothesized that this bacterium causes ulcers and stomach cancer. However, this assumption was met with ridicule in the medical and scientific communities. Later in 1998, Marshall said: “Everyone was against me, but I knew that I was right” [5] .

After the experiments on the infection of laboratory pigs failed, in 1984 Marshall himself drank a culture of bacteria isolated from the patient, and he soon developed symptoms of gastritis with achlorhydria : gastric discomfort, nausea , vomiting, and a peculiar smell from the mouth ( halitosis ). Then Marshall was able to demonstrate that he was able to heal his helicobacter gastritis with a 14-day course of treatment with bismuth salts and metronidazole. On the 14th day after infection, the biopsy did not show the presence of bacteria in the stomach. This proved, in accordance with Koch’s postulates , that H. pylori causes gastritis. An article describing the experiment was published in the journal [6] and became the most quoted article of the journal [7] .

After that, Marshall worked at the Royal Perth Hospital (1985–86), then at the University of Virginia ( USA ) (1986–1996). Later he returned to the University of Western Australia , where he worked in 1998–2003 [8] . Marshall continues to work at the University’s H.pylori research laboratories in the field of bacterium research [9] .

Awards

In 2005, Barry Marshall and his colleague Robin Warren received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine "For his work on the effect of Helicobacter pylori bacteria on the onset of gastritis and gastric and duodenal ulcers" [10] .
