The early years
Matthew Broderick was born in 1962 in New York in an acting family of immigrants. His mother, Patricia ( nee Biow), was Jewish, and his father, James Joseph Broderick, was a Catholic of Irish descent. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Matthew studied at Walden School in New York.
Broderick speaks of his national heritage as follows [6] :
| Yes, I am a Jew, but religion has never attracted me, and, to be honest, I have no idea what to do with my Jewry, what traditions to observe, what can be done and what cannot. And while I do not have time to pay more attention to my roots. |
Career
Matthew followed in the footsteps of his parents as a teenager. He began working in the theater and soon so succeeded in this difficult matter that he even received the Tony Theater Award at the age of twenty-three for his role in Neil Simon 's play “Memories of Brighton Beach”. In the future, Broderick quite successfully collaborated with Simon and Horton Foote , whose plays helped to reveal the actor’s versatile talent [6] .
Broderick made his debut in the movie “The Return of Max Dagen ” (1983), and the first major success came to him when the fantastic film directed by John Badham “ War Games ” was released. In this film, Broderick appeared in the image of an American schoolboy, a young computer genius who unexpectedly connects to the Pentagon computer system. After this role, Broderick began to play in many films in which he starred as the main character. The most famous of them were “ Ferris Bueller takes a day off ”, “ Family affair ”, “ Glory ”, “The night you and I never met ”, “ Godzilla ”, “ Inspector Gadget ”, “ Stepford wives ”, “ Producers ”, “ Welcome, or Neighbors are not admitted ” and others.
In addition to acting, Broderick once shot his film " Infinity ", where he played the main role. He also voiced many characters, including the lion Simba in the cartoon The Lion King and its sequels.
Personal life
On May 19, 1997, Broderick married actress Sarah Jessica Parker , whom she met through her brother. The marriage registration ceremony took place at the deconstructed synagogue in the Lower East Side . Despite the fact that Broderick considers himself a Jew, the ceremony was held by his sister, Janet Broderick Kraft, an episcopal priest [7] .
The couple has a son, James Wilkie Broderick (born October 28, 2002), as well as twin daughters, Marion Loretta Ewell and Tabitha Hodge (born June 22, 2009), born to a surrogate mother [8] [9] [10] . They live in Manhattan , and also have residences in Ireland , near Kilkar , and Hamptons .
1987 Crash
August 5, 1987, while driving a rented BMW car in Enniskillen , Northern Ireland , Broderick drove into the oncoming lane, head-on colliding with Volvo , who was driving Anna Gallager, 30 years old, accompanied by her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63 years old ; both women died on the spot. He was on vacation in the company of actress Jennifer Gray , whom he began to secretly meet during the filming of the movie “Ferris Bueller takes the day off,” and after the accident, the public became aware of their relationship. Broderick received a broken leg, ribs, concussion, and lung damage, and Gray received a neck injury .
Broderick told the police that he did not remember anything about the accident and did not know why he was in the oncoming lane: “I don’t remember that day. I don’t even remember how I woke up in the morning. I don’t remember how to make the bed. I remember that I woke up in a hospital with a strange sensation in my leg. ” He was charged with death as a result of dangerous driving, for which he faced up to five years in prison. Broderick was later sentenced on a lesser charge of reckless driving and fined $ 175 [11] [12] [13] [14] .
The son and brother of the victims, Martin Doherty, called the verdict "abuse of justice." He later forgave Broderick to meet in 2003 for a sense of completion. In February 2012, after Broderick starred in a commercial for a Honda car that appeared during the Super Bowl commercial, Doherty said that the meeting did not take place and that Broderick “is not the best choice for the driver, knowing his past” [15] .
