The ideology of the party was formed on the basis of the Guzman guild (corporate) movement that arose at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in 1966 and advocated for the independence and depoliticization of the middle layer of civil society.
In 2009, together with the National Renewal Party and a number of small VAT movements, the Coalition for Change was formed on the basis of the Chilean Alliance , whose candidate, Sebastian Pignera , won the presidential election and became Chilean president. In 2010-2014, VAT was the largest party in the Chilean parliament.
