History

In a place northeast of the village of Archea-Nemea and 5 kilometers southeast of modern Nemea was the temple of Zeus of Nemea and the stadium where the Nemean Games were held [7] . The center of Nemea from the 10th century BC e. was Flunt [8] .

In the days of Homer, Fliunt was known as Arefirea ( Αιρεθυρέα ), “attractive” [8] . According to legend, Arefireya was the daughter of Arant , the first local resident [9] , who was older than Pelasg , son of Arcade [10] . Mentioned in the List of Ships in the Iliad [11] :

Ornius hail inhabited, cheerful Arefire.

Fliant was named after Fliant , son of Dionysus and Arefirei [12] . Pausanias writes about the temple of Demeter of Prostasia and Kora [13] [14] .

Excavations were carried out in 1925 by Karl Blegen . A Neolithic settlement was discovered, as well as an ancient city: the lower places of the theater, the foundation of the stage, the ruins of the “palace” and part of the masonry of the fortress wall made of large rectangular stones. Through Flunt passed the way to Arcadia . During its heyday, 15 thousand inhabitants lived in the cities [8] .

The flunt was larger than the Cleons . When the Dorians was on the side of Sparta [6] . From Flinta there were the philosopher Asklepiad of Flint, the artist Cleagor, the author of “Sill” Timon from Flunta, Asopodor [15] , the student of Plato, Axiotheus Fliuskaya, the students of Philolaus Fanton, Diocles, Polymnest and Ehekrat, the creator of the satirical dramas Pratin , his son Aristius [8] [16] .

In the village of Aidonia , 8 kilometers northwest of Nemea, there is a Mycenaean cemetery. In 1978-1980, the cemetery was sacked by black diggers [8] [17] .

Some of the items stolen from the tombs, including four gold rings, an amber ring, gold jewelry, amulets made of talchlorite , chalcedony and amethyst were auctioned at the Michael Ward Gallery in New York and returned to Greece [8] [17 ] ] .

Valuable findings indicate the existence of an important Mycenaean settlement, possibly Arefirei [8] .

On the hill of Polyphengos ( Πολύφεγγος ) is the Byzantine monastery of Our Lady of Vrachos [18] .

7 kilometers south-west of Nemea, a quarter of Agiorgitiko wine is produced in Leondion [18] .
