Description
The original frame of the polyptych from the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Bergamo has been lost. According to recent studies, the polyptych was written around 1500 , which is confirmed by the characteristic traditional style, for example, a large amount of gold.
The architectural composition is unified, which allows us to perceive the boards in a complex. Foppa builds two rows with a portico and upper loggia , depicting in perspective a coffered ceiling and the floor on which the saints are placed. The scene with the stigmata of St. Francis in the center of the upper row takes place in a rural area near Eremo della Verna: a lovingly painted landscape dramatically invades an architectural structure.
The main scene with the Madonna on the throne unfolds against the backdrop of a vaulted room, built in perspective. The unusual gesture of the baby, which touches the lute strings of one of the angels, violates formal severity. The ensemble is complemented by an altar step depicting paintings of the childhood of Jesus and from above with the image of Christ blessing.
