Description
The Brera Pinakothek contains the most significant works of the artist’s period, when he was in Lombardy , preparing for the career of a painter. Among them are the “Warriors” from Panigarola’s house, a series of frescoes that are exhibited along the entrance corridor of the Pinacoteca, as well as this board, which was intended for the abbey of Chiaravalle, an influential Cistercian complex near Milan , whose abbot at the end of the 15th century was Cardinal Ascanio Maria Sforza Visconti , brother of Lodovico Sforza .
The work is indicative not only of Bramante’s searches in terms of perspective and solving the proportions of the human body, but also an obvious tribute to Lombard realism: geometric idealization and skillful construction of the deep space associated with religious and human tension, which is conveyed thanks to almost hyperrealistic details (swollen veins of hands, rope on neck, tears, etc.). The pathetic power of the expressive face is confidently combined with a refined and smooth modeling of the figure, with an elegant carved pilaster and with the unusual shape of an open window.
The beautiful, truly Lombard landscape - water and mountains - and the carefully cut-out black hair of Jesus can be considered a reflection of the first Milanese period in the works of Leonardo da Vinci .
