Minister of Defense of the Netherlands ( Dutch: Minister van Defensie ) - Ministerial position in the Government of the Netherlands. The Minister of Defense is a member of the Dutch cabinet and is responsible for the overall defense policy, as well as for its implementation. Defense policy is part of the Dutch national security policy. On October 26, 2017, Anka Beyleveld was appointed Minister of Defense [1] .

Description
Gerrit Jan Pieman is considered the first Minister of Defense of the Batavian Republic . On February 6, 1798, he was appointed to the post of Minister of War ( Dutch agent (minister) van Oorlog ), which was an analogue of the modern post of Minister of Defense [2] [3] .
The main task of the Minister of Defense is to coordinate and guide the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands . The minister’s authority extends to the general defense policy of the country, the national and international deployment of the armed forces of the Netherlands, international relations ( NATO , the EU ) and cyber defense [4] . Other functions are performed by the following officials: the Secretary General is responsible for the civilian responsibilities of the leadership, and the chief of defense is responsible for the preparation and execution of operations performed by the armed forces [5] .
Responsibilities and Powers
- The Dutch Minister of Defense has the authority to set tasks for the Royal Netherlands Military Police and coordinate military operations;
- the leadership of the Ministry of Defense belongs to the Minister of Defense
- The Minister of Defense has the right to demand Russian from the Inspector General of the Armed Forces of the Netherlands provide the requested information or recommendations, as well as prepare an annual report, which the Minister reads to the House of Representatives annually on the third Wednesday of May;
- bears full responsibility for military aviation, while the Office of Military Aviation ( Dutch. De Militaire Luchtvaart Autoriteit ) on behalf of the Minister of Defense implements in practice the norms of the law "on aviation" ( Dutch. Wet luchtvaart );
- The Minister of Defense is required to be a permanent member of the following organizations: Council on Foreign Relations ( Dutch Raad voor Internationale Betrekkingen ), Council on Intelligence and Security Services ( Dutch Raad voor de Inlichtingen en Veiligheidsdiensten ), Security Council ( Dutch Raad voor de Veiligheid ) , Kingdom Relations Council ( Netherlands. Raad voor Koninkrijksrelaties );
- takes part in intra-ministerial discussions;
- possesses political power and exercises it on behalf of the government of the Netherlands, since the country's Constitution provides that the government will always have the highest power over the armed forces (art. 97) [6] ;
- the Minister of Defense is the legal provider of medical services for employees of the Ministry and all military personnel (the Secretary General of the Ministry is the administrative provider of medical services);
- informs the commission of the Intelligence and Security Service of the decision on the confidentiality of the information [7] .
