Biography

Sesson Sukei was a follower of the Soto-shu Buddhist denomination. He lived most of his life in the north of Honshu and never came into contact with representatives of Zen teachings and artists from Kyoto , so the styles and trends that developed in the city, considered the center of cultural life in Japan, did not influence him [2] [3] . Sources differ on the date and place of his birth. It is believed that he was born in the small town of Ota in Hitati in 1504 [2] . His father was a member of the Satake clan, which controlled most of the region [2] . Since the father chose another son as the heir, Sesson Sukei went to a Buddhist monastery in his youth to become a monk [2] .

Sesson learned painting as a young man and even wrote a small book about painting, where he talked about the problematic issues of artists - drawing from life, copying the works of masters and expressing his personality [2] [3] . He studied painting on his own, exploring the works of Shubun and Sesshu [1] . In honor of these two masters, he chose his pseudonym [1] . Nevertheless, Sessu's work influenced him to a greater extent [1] . Like Sessu, Sesson Sukei tried to create expressive and dynamic landscapes using mascara [1] . For some time, Sasson Sukei lived in Getaro; from 1542 he began to lead the life of a nomad monk [2] . Mention of him appeared in various documents of that time. Of these, it is known that Sesson Sukei at least twice went to Aizu to give painting lessons to the daimyo Asine Moriuji - first in 1546, then in 1561 [2] [4] . By 1550, he reached Odawara , where for a long time he was in the midst of local Zen Buddhist monks. So, in 1550, he created a portrait of the famous monk Ethan Sosei [2] . For the most part, the activities of Sesson Shukai were then associated not with painting, but with religion. In particular, he taught Zen daimyo Hojo Ujimase [2] . In those days, Odawara and Kamakura turned into an independent cultural center in eastern Japan, not dependent on Kyoto, which was considered the cultural capital [2] . Artists, including Sasson Shukai, have developed their own style of suiboku here. Thanks to connections with the Hojo clan , Sesson Sukei gained access to the collections of Chinese and Japanese paintings belonging to the clan and local monasteries. Around 1561, Sesson Sukei left Odawara and by 1563 settled in the small town of Himaru ( Fukushima ), where he lived until the end of his days [2] .

The time to create most of Sasson Shukai’s surviving works is difficult to determine. Recent studies have shown that most of them were created in the last years of his life - since about 1570 [2] . In the early years, Sesson Sukei did not sign his work. According to several seals used by him in different years, researchers were able to guess the time of creation of part of his work [2] .
