Biography

The only son of a traveler and collector , Count Konstantin Branitsky (1824–1884) and Countess Jadwiga Potocka (1827–1916), the great-grandson of the hetman of the great crown, Francis Xavier Branicki , one of the founders of the Targovitsa Confederation . Owner of vast estates in the Kiev region , Montresor castle in France (inherited from Uncle Xavier ). Since 1892 - the owner of the Wilanian estates of Alexandra Potocka , since 1911 - the Russian ordination in the Grodno province after the death of Uncle Stefan Potocki (1826-1910).

Funded wildlife research in South America and Africa. He continued the collection of a natural collection begun by his father, mainly a zoological one. In 1887, Count Branicki presented his collection with a private museum of nature (Museum of Branicki), which in 1919 was transferred to the Polish state . Along with the collections of the Zoological Office, created in 1819 at the University of Warsaw , he created the Zoological Department of the National Museum of Natural Sciences.

For twenty years, Xavier Branicki was chairman of the Warsaw Rowing Union , the oldest Polish sports society.

In response to the statement of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian troops, Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich Romanov of August 14, 1914 , Xavier Branicki participated in the signing of the telegram, in which it was stated that the blood of the sons of Poland, shed together with the blood of the sons of Russia in the fight against a common enemy, will become large a guarantee for a new life in the world and friendship of two Slavic peoples. During the First World War , after the German occupation of Warsaw, Count Xavier Branicki left for Kiev in 1915 . After the war, Branitsky was mainly in Montresor ( France ). He had a reputation as a strange and mean man, probably due to a reduction in personal expenses due to the loss of his possessions in Ukraine as a result of the October Revolution and income from the Russian ordination, which he lost during the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921 .

Xavier Branicki allocated significant funds to maintain the Wilanow Palace and the museum’s collection, which suffered during the hostilities.

In June 1926, the 62-year-old Count Xavier Branicki died in the Montresor estate. He bequeathed his estates in Vilunow and the Russian ordination to his second son Adam, and the estate of Montresor to his daughter Jadwig, the wife of Stanislav Ray.
