Biography
Born in the small town of Montagnac ( fr. Montagnac ) of the Herault department in the south of France, Paula Delsol leaves with his parents in Indochina and returns to his homeland in 1946, settling in the coastal town of Palavas-les-Flots ( fr. Palavas-les-Flots ) [ 3] .
After studying the law [4], she enters the cinematic environment thanks to her acquaintance in 1952 on the set of the film for children “ White Mane: Wild Horse ” with the assistant to the main cameraman, Jean Malige ( fr. Jean Malige , 1919-1996), who becomes her husband . In 1954, the couple created in Montpellier an independent recording and mixing studio Studio Auditorium du Languedoc [5] .
In 1955, Delsol released his first autobiographical novel Adieu et merci (Goodbye and Thanks), inspired by her memories of childhood and adolescence in Haiphong ( Vietnam ) [4] , and comes to the decision to create their own films. She begins to shoot short films, first sharing the director's functions with her husband, and then she begins to work independently. She also willingly writes scripts; In 1957, he worked as an assistant to Francois Truffaut on the script for his short comedy “The Fools ” ( fr. Les Mistons ) [6] , and in the fall of 1958 he participates in writing the script for the full-length erotic comedy Louis Félix ( fr. Louis Félix ) “Summer Heat” ( fr. Chaleur d'Été ), filmed on the nature of Cap d'Agda ( fr. Cap d'Agde ). After publishing the second novel Pourquoi j'aime Nine (Why I Love Nina), she writes the script for her first and most famous feature film La dérive ( Drift ), originally released under the name Une fille à la dérive .

Filmed in the spirit of the New Wave, it stood out in tone and tone from most films of the same era, because it showed a young, modern woman long before the moral revolution of 1968 [8] . When issuing a film license to the film, the Classification Commission recommended that Delsol remove some of her character’s replicas, which the director did not agree with, and the film, with an age limit of 18 years and with the complete absence of any intimate details, was only allowed to be restricted in 1964. rental in specialized cinemas, thereby losing the success that he could count on. [6] .
Despite the support of Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard [9] , as well as receiving the Grand Prix of the French Federation of Cinema Clubs ( fr. Fédération française des ciné-clubs ) at the 17th Cannes Film Festival [8] , Paula Delsoll will return to the cinema only 12 years with Ben and Benedict ( Fr. Ben et Bénédict ).
I released my first film in 1964. It was "Drift"; and since then I haven’t been able to take anything off. Maybe because I didn’t have the courage to fight to make a second film. And also because I was too adamant in refusing to compromise. Unfortunately, cinema is an art, but also a business; so you need to be a little more flexible. After all, it must be admitted that after this long 12-year silence they forgot me. So I had to assume that I was starting from scratch. This is sad.
In 1965, Paula Delsol moved from Montpellier to Paris [3] and devotes himself to literary activity. In subsequent years, she publishes several books on such popular topics as Chinese and Arabic horoscopes , folk omens about the weather, love magic, as well as a collection of old sayings and two books for children. For a solid weekly, she makes regular astrological predictions that are popular among readers.
In 1974, she again turns to the director’s profession and makes a series on tolerance for television [4] , and in 1976, she shot her second full-length feature film Ben and Bénédict about the fantasies of a young woman performed by Françoise Lebrin ( Fr. Françoise Lebrun ), which enchants the character of beginner Andre Dussolier. In continuation, she shoots short films for the FR3 channel and two television films, Un homme comblé with Robin Renucci and Augusta . [four]
Her latest novel La Ligne de vie (Life Line) is released in 1990.
Paula Delsol dies in Sevres on June 12, 2015, at the 92nd year of life. On June 18, after saying goodbye to the church of Saint-Romain-de-Sevres ( Fr. Église Saint-Romain de Sèvres ), she was cremated in the crematorium of the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris . [11] .
A professor at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington ( USA ) and author of numerous works on French cinema art Tim Palmer spent a lot of time in French libraries collecting information about this woman, whom he describes as “unheard voice, dazzling, combative and energetic personality.
