Vodnjan is one of the two Istrian cities (along with Rovinj ), where native speakers of the endangered Istoroan or Istriot language are still alive, which was once spoken in almost all of the south-west of the peninsula. The dialect of the Istro-Roman language, common in Vodnjan, is called Diniana after the Italian name of the city. The self-name of Istriot in Vodnjan is Bumbaro.

Tourism brings most of the city’s revenue. In addition to tourism services, the population is employed in agriculture (viticulture and the cultivation of olives) and the food industry.
