The tournament was selected for the 2002 World Cup in Madrid . The right to represent Europe is earned by the two best teams, the UK and Germany for men and Russia and Germany for women.
Since 2002, the women's 3000 meter hurdles race has been included in the competition program. Thus, the number of male and female Cup disciplines equaled.
In the women's long jump, Russian Tatyana Kotova showed the 12th result in world history and the best since 1992 - 7.42 meters. The closest competitor lost 77 centimeters to her.
Julia Pechenkina ran 400 meters with barriers for 53.38, which was a new record of the competition. Svetlana Feofanova showed another best result in the European Cups in the pole vault, 4.70 m.

Team Championship
For the sixth time in a row, Russian women won the European Cup, while the German team for the fifth time in the last six years was second, and the French finished third for the fifth time in a row.
The victory among men was won by the national team of Great Britain, but four years later after the end of the competition it dropped out of the prize-winning three. The reason was the decision of the IAAF to disqualify Duane Chambers for doping. All results of the British sprinter from January 1, 2002 to August 1, 2003 were canceled. Thus, his team lost points for victories in the 100 meters and 4 × 100 meters relay, and the victory in the European Cup passed to Germany.
Ukraine and Finland in men and Poland and Ukraine in women dropped out of the First League.
