Hughes Hall was founded in the 19th century as the Cambridge Training College for Women ( English Cambridge Training College for Women Teachers ), designed to educate women teachers. Now both women and men study and work in college. The college occupies several buildings built in the 19th and 20th centuries in the immediate vicinity of the university itself (through a cricket field).

The motto of Disce ut Servias ( English Learn in order to serve ) literally translates as Learn to serve .

History

In 1878, the Teachers' Training Syndicate was created at the University of Cambridge, the purpose of which was to develop a curriculum for students who intend to become teachers. As a result, in 1885, Hugh Hall College of Postgraduate Women opened its doors to the first 14 students.

Full university membership was recognized in 1947, and in 1949 the college was officially recognized by the Cambridge Institution and was renamed Hughes Hall , in honor of its first head, Elizabeth Hughes. But Hughes Hall received full college status and a royal charter [3] only in 2006, 121 years after its founding [4] .

In 1973, the first male students were accepted, Hughes Hall was the first among female colleges that transformed into mixed [5] .
