These include “three by three” gameplay, a new help system, and a simplified management scheme. Character design uses traditional two-dimensional animated sprites , while the background and visual effects are drawn in three-dimensional graphics . It does Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the first franchise game using pseudo - three - dimensional graphics.

The game received positive reviews from critics, who ranked the game’s advantages as gameplay, visual images, and a character selection screen. The disadvantages of the game are the soundtrack and inaccessible multiplayer mode via the Internet outside of Japan for the first time. After the release of this game, Capcom lost the license from Marvel Comics, and over the next 10 years there were no new games in the series. Capcom announced the work on the sequel in April 2010, which was released in February 2011 under the name Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds .

Story

Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes - the fourth game of the Marvel vs. Series Capcom ; these games are tag team based fighting games. [2] [3] The player collects a team of three characters to participate in a one-on-one battle, which distinguishes this game from the previous game in the series, Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes , where the teams consisted of two characters. [4] The game features an improved version of the “ Variable System ” from the previous games in the series, which allows the player to replace the fighter with a “spare” from his character team at any time in the battle. [5] [6] Unlike Clash of Super Heroes , where, with the exception of the “substitute”, the “spare” characters were non-player, in the gameplay Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has built-in Variable Assist mechanics, previously introduced in Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter . This mechanic allows team members who are outside the game screen to provide assistance to the active character once. [7] [8] Each game character has the opportunity to assist in three different types, denoted by the Greek letters α , β, and γ . [9] [10] Help can range from throwing a variety of shells to healing a character. Assisting characters also take damage if they are hit by an enemy attack. [11] While one character is in battle, other characters slowly replenish their health bar. [12] The battle ends when a team completely runs out of health for all three fighters. If the time allotted for the battle ends earlier than this, then the winner is the team that has more health left at the time. [9]

As in the previous games of the series, as the character deals or receives damage, a colored indicator gradually called “hyper combo charge” ( English Hyper Combo Gauge ) gradually fills up at the bottom of the screen. [9] When it is full, the player can use several special techniques, for example, “hyper combo” ( English hyper combo ), powerful attacks with high damage, “delayed hyper combo” ( English delayed hyper combo ). This allows the player to sequentially apply multiple “hyper combos”, as well as “variable combinations” ( English variable combinations ), during which all characters of the player’s team enter the battle at once and simultaneously perform their own “combos”. [9] [13] Also, a new knock-out mechanics ( snapback English ) was added to the gameplay, the essence of which is forcing the opponent to change characters. [2] In Marvel vs. Capcom 2 uses a modified 6-button control scheme from Clash of Super Heroes . [14] However, instead of using 6 buttons for three pairs of weak, medium and strong punches and kicks, the game uses a set of 4 buttons for attacking and 2 buttons for calling for help. [14]

Game Modes

In Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes implements both single-player and multi- player game mode. [14] The game has an "arcade mode" ( born Arcade Mode ). In this mode, the player must defeat seven computer-controlled teams in order to fight the final boss . This boss is Abyss (from the English - "Abyss"), appearing in three forms. [14] Unlike previous games in the series, in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 does not provide unique endings for each character, the player will receive the same ending, regardless of the characters he has chosen for the "arcade mode". [15] In the “confrontation mode” ( Eng. Versus Mode ), players can compete face to face. [12] There is a “Training Mode” for training movements and combos . It is possible to configure some parameters, for example, the number of charges available for a "hyper combo charge". [14] The Score Attack mode is similar to the Arcade mode, but the player must repel waves of attacks from computer-controlled characters. The purpose of this mode is to obtain the maximum possible number of points without using continuations . [12]

In the version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for arcade machines also has an experience system, while unlocking "hidden" characters is possible only after receiving a certain number of experience points . [16] This system was removed from the versions for consoles; instead, the Secret Factor menu was introduced. Through this menu, the player can unlock the "hidden" characters, the background for the game screens and color schemes for points received during the normal game. [12] Versions for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 support multi-player play over the Internet. Regular fights, rating fights, as well as the lobby are available via the Internet. [17] [18] Japanese version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for Dreamcast also supports online play through the Capcom Match Service network. However, in this mode there is a limitation, due to which only two Dreamcast systems can interact in it. [19] [20]

Game Characters

Total in the game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 represented 56 game characters. [14] Characters from various Marvel Comics comics, such as Avengers and X-Men , as well as characters from various Capcom gaming franchises, such as Street Fighter , Darkstalkers and Mega Man, are presented on the selection screen. [14] Several characters were developed specifically for this game: Amingo (a cactus creature), Ruby Heart (a French air pirate), and SonSon (a bo -owning monkey girl who is the granddaughter of the protagonist from the 1984 Soncom Arcade game from Capcom) . [21] In most versions of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is initially available for 24 characters, while the remaining 32 can be unlocked for points. However, in the versions for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, all fighters are initially unavailable. [13] [18]

Development

Capcom statement on the development of the sequel of the game Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes was published December 1, 1999, it reported that a game called Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes . [22] [23] The game was intended for the Sega Naomi arcade platform and the Dreamcast game console. This game was the first attempt for Capcom to create a fighting game that was not designed for CP System II or III . [4] [24] It is the first in a series of Marvel vs. Capcom combines hand-drawn two-dimensional sprites and three-dimensional backgrounds. [25] Both Japanese versions support Dreamcast Visual Memory Cards. [26] The player has the ability to connect a memory card to an arcade machine for exchanging data, record the gained experience points on it, which can then be used on the home version to unlock characters, arenas and colors of character costumes. [27] The experience system contains three types of experience points: "N-points" can be obtained when playing the arcade version, "D-points" are awarded when playing the version for the Dreamcast, "V-points" can be obtained when playing via the Internet. [20] The game supports the ability to network two Dreamcast consoles for playing through the dedicated Match Service network. [19] This network, created by Capcom in conjunction with KDD Corp, is based on KDD Corp’s Data on Demand technology, which provides network latency of no more than 70 ms. [19] [20] This feature was excluded from all later editions of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 , both Japanese and others. [24] [28]

At a press conference as part of the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2002, Capcom's plans to port Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on Playstation 2 and Xbox . [29] The Playstation 2 version received support for one-on-one battles between players using a USB modem, however, the Xbox version did not provide support for playing through Xbox Live . [30] [31] This multiplayer mode was also available only in the Japanese version. [25] Internet game support was discontinued in 2004 when Capcom abandoned dial- up Internet access. [32]

Following the commercial success and critical acclaim of the 2008 Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix game, Capcom said it will continue to create HD remakes of its previously released games. [33] To a specifically asked question about plans for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Capcom Business Development and Strategic Planning Vice President Christian Svensson replied that the fans received the most calls regarding this game. [34] Subsequently, on April 27, 2009, in a joint statement, Marvel and Capcom announced the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on the Xbox 360 through the Xbox Live Arcade and on the PlayStation 3 through the PlayStation Store . [18] [35] The demo was released on April 30 only for the PlayStation Network . [36] When asked about the lack of a Wii version, Svensson stated that Capcom was unable to release the game on this console due to licensing restrictions and the file size limit in WiiWare . [37]

The ports for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are developed by Backbone Entertainment, previously working with Capcom on Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix . [18] The game is based on the original source code for the Dreamcast version. [1] Marvel vs. Internet Features Capcom 2 is based on the same network code as Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix . [18] Additional changes in the version for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were filtering settings for character sprites, called “smooth”, “clear” and “classic”. [18] Added support for widescreen screens: since the game initially only supported a 4: 3 aspect ratio, the developers had to expand the viewing angle of the virtual camera. When porting, the ability to adjust the soundtrack volume and use your own sound recordings as a soundtrack was also added. [1] Capcom offered the free downloadable hip hop mixtape as an alternative soundtrack. [38]

Announcement of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the iOS operating system occurred on April 20, 2012. [39] Capcom has provided two control zone configurations for the screens of the iPhone and iPad . [40] Players can choose either a standard control circuit with 6 buttons or a compact circuit with 4 buttons and “motion control”. [40] The iOS version does not support the game via the Internet, however, it supports the “opposition mode” via Bluetooth connection . [41]

Marvel vs. Game Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes after the release won positive reviews for the intensity of the gameplay , detailed backgrounds and the generally rich visual design, as well as for the significant selection of characters offered. Anoop Gantayat from IGN praised the game for an updated combat system, despite its increased level of frenzy. He rated the game as "one of the best fighting games ever released." [11] In GameRevolution, the game was praised for its wide selection of available characters and "crazy action." [13] According to their statement, Capcom created an outstanding sequel , combining "timeless gameplay, an ensemble of characters and hyper-energy." This site also praised the graphics for creating a “ 2.5-dimensional graphic miracle, a real treat for the eyes.” GameSpot's Jeff Gerstmann praised the game for its new control scheme and the addition of three-to-three battles to the game. He concludes that fans of the previous game will be pleased with the innovations in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 . [27]

Early versions of the game for Dreamcast , PlayStation 2, and Xbox were criticized for their lack of support for online games outside of Japan. Gerstmann noted that support for a multiplayer online game could add a lot of appeal to the game. [27] In a review of the Xbox version of the game, Aaron Boulding from IGN criticized this flaw, accusing Capcom of failing to establish support for Xbox Live, contrary to these promises. In view of this circumstance, he rated the game low. [44] However, when versions of the game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were released, critics praised the game for its quality support for the multiplayer online game. Destructoid's Topher Cantler praised the effectiveness of network mode, calling it “outstanding” and “flawless.” Wesley Yin-Poole of VideoGamer.com noted that adding network mode to the game made it a “valuable asset." [65]

Regardless of the gaming platform, critics noted the biggest drawback of the game was a soundtrack performed in the style of jazz. IGN's Jeremy Dunham described gaming music as “simply divinely disgusting,” stating that “jazz lounge music and fast beat” doesn't even match the action of the game to the slightest extent. [25] Martin Taylor of Eurogamer described described his disappointment with the subtle visual component of the game as “the terrifying soundtrack of elevator music and poor quality sound effects”. [64] GameRevolution shared this feeling by describing the soundtrack as "the most mediocre music you've ever heard." [13]

A few years after the release, various critics began to actively include Marvel vs. Capcom 2 's lists of the best fighting games. One of the first was ScrewAttack, the part of GameTrailers that did it in 2007, [67] as well as Virgin Media in 2009. [68] The game was named the best two-dimensional fighting game in 2011 and 2013 by the Complex resource. [69] Also in 2013, Nerdist named Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the most iconic computer game in the Marvel universe. [70] In 2010, GamePro placed the game at 33rd place on the list of the best games for PlayStation 2. [71] As of December 15, 2013, sales of versions of the games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles amounted to more than 1.4 million copies before the termination their distribution on these systems. [72]

Sequel

Shortly after the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Capcom Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds . [77]
