History
On the map of the city since 1820 (Ovidiopolskaya). In 1822 it was called German, due to the large number of Germans among the inhabitants of the street. Around the same time, it is called the modern name - Nezhinskaya. The street got such a name due to the fact that many Greeks came from the city, coming from the city of Nizhyn . In 1857, the street is indicated as Lutheran.
At 5 pm on June 16, 1905, Odessa was shocked by ship’s gunshots, which was fired by Potemkin soldiers who decided to intimidate the authorities. Three blanks were made, then two live shots at the Vorontsov Palace and the City Duma. However, due to the actions of the senior signalman Vedenmeer, shells did not hit the target. One exploded on Bugaevskaya, and the other in the city center, on the corner of Spiridonovskaya and Nezhinskaya streets.
With the establishment of Soviet power, the street was renamed in honor of the German Social Democrat Franz Mehring .
In 1994, the name Nezhinskaya was returned to the street.
