Biography
Born in London in the family of Julian and Miriam Hirsch. He grew up in Highgate and graduated from City University of London with a specialization in philosophy and sociology. He continued his studies at the University of Warwick , where he received a Ph.D. in sociology for a thesis on crimes against humanity in international law. His first monograph, Laws Against Genocide (International Processes), was awarded a prize by the British Sociological Association (The Philip Abrams Prize, 2004) and was devoted to issues of international legislation on genocide, with a detailed analysis of the trial of A. A. Savonyuk , the process of David Irving against Deborah Lipstadt and Courts of the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia .
Pursuing the problems of modern anti-Semitism, he introduced the concept of “ The Livingstone Formulation ”, named after Ken Livingstone, the representative of the left wing of the Labor Party, who repeatedly used this tactic [1] [2] . Livingston’s wording implies defending against accusations of anti-Semitism by using counter-accusations to play an anti-Semitic card in order to stop legitimate criticism of Jews [3] . In 2017, his second monograph, Modern Left Anti-Semitism, was published, including a review of the use of Livingston's wording and other similar tactics by representatives of left-wing political movements in the UK.
Author of a number of scientific publications on crimes against humanity, modern anti-Semitism, totalitarian movements and totalitarianism, new populism [4] .
He was an activist of the National Organization of Labor Students . Founder of the public organization Engage , whose activities are aimed at monitoring and combating anti-Semitism in the UK; editor of her site. Professor, Goldsmith College , University of London [5] .
