History
One of the oldest streets of the city, it is believed that it was laid still by de Ribas , in 1795-1797. It was first mentioned in 1808 in documents on the development of postal houses in the Kherson province. In 1812, for the Odessa Post Office, the house of Březovsky was bought at the intersection with Catherine Street (at the site of the modern building of Ukrtelecom, 33). On this office the street got its first name - Postal - under which it is indicated on the map of the city of 1826.
In 1822-1824, according to the project of the famous Odessa engineer Just Just Gayui , Novikov Bridge was built at the intersection of the Quarantine beam street (named after the owner of the Odessa cable plant merchant Novikov). The bridge is also the oldest stone bridge in Odessa.
The street got its modern name in 1902 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky . Thus, this is one of the few streets of the city, which almost did not change its name.
