History

Plays in the city garden
Brass band.
On the bench where you sit
No free places.
Because lindens smell
And the river glistens
To me from your beautiful eyes
The gaze cannot be averted.

Nearly half the world I passed -
I haven’t met anyone like you
And I didn’t think of thinking,
What will I meet you.

Excerpt from the song

The song "In the City Garden" was written by composer Matthew Blanter to the words of the poet Alexei Fatyanov in 1947 [1] . According to Blanter, the song was created very quickly. On one of the autumn days of 1947, Fatyanov visited him, who showed him a poem that began with the words “A brass band plays in the city garden”. They began to work, and “by lunchtime” their first song, “In the City Garden”, was ready. According to Blanter, it was easy to collaborate with Fatyanov - the poet "worked hard, he was all looking for any word that was needed, the only one." Many years after the creation of the song, in 1975, the composer said: “This song about the meeting of a young man with a girl in the city garden is still sweet to me. In my concerts of authorship, to my pleasure, it still sounds ” [4] [5] .

One of the first performers of the song “In the City Garden” was the singers Georgy Vinogradov [6] , Vladimir Nechaev [7] , Yuri Khochinsky [2] and Leonid Kostritsa [3] . In 1948, the lyrics along with notes were included in the compilation of Alexei Fatyanov from the series “Songs of Soviet Poets”, released by the State Music Publishing House (Muzgiz) [4] .

Analysis and reviews

Researcher of creativity FatyanovaTatyana Malysheva noted that the song “In the city garden” written in the form of a waltz is “tenderness itself”, it is not outdated, “excites lovers”, “simple words quickly reach her heart, touch her soul, awaken her imagination”. The song, in the creation of which Fatyanov “followed the best classical examples”, tells about what is dear to everyone - “a city park in his native land, a favorite, meetings with which are always welcome and joyful” [4] .

Philologist Anatoly Kulagin believed that the plot of the song “In the City Garden” (in particular, the words “on the bench where you sit, there are no empty seats”) could influence Bulat Okudzhava when creating his poem “On Tversky Boulevard” (1956), in which there were the following words: "... but there wasn’t enough space / on that green bench, / on the overpopulated, / as if a communal apartment." According to Kulagin, in contrast to the situation described in the song “In the City Garden,” the poetic dialectic of the Okudzhava image could not allow there to be no empty seats - “there is, it is obligatory to eat, just not to understand everything too literally,” Okudzhava’s “ the bench is at the same time concrete, recognizable (the one on Tverskoy), and conditional, for it contains each and every one ” [8] .

The writer Tatyana Dashkevich , author of the biography Fatyanova, wrote that the music in the song “In the City Garden” resembled “nostalgic chords of the pre-war waltz”. According to her, the lines and measures of the song - “I almost went halfway around the world - I haven’t met someone like you” - were fascinating, they “circled pairs, heads, leaves on the autumn sidewalks” [5] .
