Due to the impossibility of publishing the Old Believers 'periodical press in the Russian Empire, the first Old Believers' magazine entitled "The Old Believers" began to be edited by monk Nikola Chernyshev in December 1878 in the city of Kolomyia in Austria-Hungary . Under pressure from the Russian tsarist government, the Austro-Hungarian government closed this publication in 1888. Attempts to publish the Old Believer periodical in Austria-Hungary continued. Since 1892, the monk Nikola Chernyshev began to publish “Ancient Rus” in the same city, but this publication lasted only two years. Since 1896, under the editorship of Fyodor Melnikov, in the city of Brailov in Romania, the monthly newspaper Slovo Pravda began to print; After the arrest of Melnikov in June 1897, the newspaper was able to survive for only one year.

In Russia, the first Old Believer monthly magazine “Old Believer Herald” was founded by Bishop Innocent in 1904, however, it was published in a certain St. Petersburg printing house under a strict secret, and the place of its publication on its pages was indicated for conspiracy: Klimouci (Austria).

The possibility of legal publication of Old Believer newspapers and magazines appeared in Russia only after the publication on April 17, 1905 of the Decree on Strengthening the Principles of Tolerance and the publication of the Manifesto on October 17, 1905 . Since January 1906, the magazine “Old Believer” began to be published in Nizhny Novgorod, the editor of the first issue was I. I. Zakharov, from the second issue, Bishop Innokenty became the editor, from the fifth issue, the brother Innokenty, an Old Believer figure, and conductor Vasily Usov, became the editor. A separate issue of the journal with an index of its content for 1906 was published. Archimandrite Mikhail , priests G. Karabinovich and A. Starkov, as well as well-known counters: Fedor Melnikov , Kliment Peretrukhin , Joseph Peretrukhin , Dimitri Varakin , Nikifor Zenin and others, were collaborators and authors of articles in the journal. For a study entitled "The Clergy of the Dominant Church in the Image of Russian Modern Writers", the publication of the magazine "Old Believer" on December 24, 1907 was suspended on the 12th issue of 1907, a little later the magazine was closed. On January 30, 1908, the case of the ninth issue of the journal for 1907 was heard in the district court of Nizhny Novgorod, in which this study was published [1] . At the verdict of the court, the number was to be burned. Editor Vasily Usov was sent to prison for three months. Prior to this suspension, the magazine was repeatedly subjected to administrative penalties. Vasily Usov was arrested for three months for "blasphemy against Seraphim of Sarov " in the fifth issue of the magazine, in this issue was published "Poem on the discovery of the remains of Seraphim of Sarov" [2] .
