Against the background of the predawn sky, two white swans are shown located in the nest in the reeds , in the foreground along the entire lower edge of the picture are several unopened buds of water lilies (lotuses) .

Friedrich used the swan motif for the first time in a study of the same name around 1820, this work is stored in the Goethe House-Museum in Frankfurt am Main . The German art critic Helmut Börsch-Zupan put forward the version that the appearance in Frederick's work of such an unusual motif - a lotus flower and swans - was caused by the impression that the philosophical composition of the German playwright and poet Otto Heinrich von Leben "Lotus Leafs" (1817) had an impact on the artist and his own collection of poems "Swan" (1816) [1] . The painting was painted around 1832, because this year it was shown to the public in Prague at an exhibition organized by the Prague patron Alois Clara .

In early 1832, the painting was sent to Russia , as it was acquired by the Palace Board for one of the imperial palaces; upon arrival in St. Petersburg, she was placed in the Znamensky Palace , and after the death of Nicholas I was transferred to the Ropshinsky Palace , from where in 1928 she was transferred to the State Hermitage [2] ; since the end of 2014 it has been exhibited in the building of the General Staff Building in hall 352 [3] .
