Held from July 5 to 10, 2016, playoff matches were held at the Lanxess Arena . The tournament was organized by ESL , the tournament was held in Cologne , Germany . Regional Qualifications (Minor Tournaments)
Minors were held in four regions: Asian, European, American and CIS. From each region, the two best teams got into the closed qualification. All games were played offline.

Closed Qualifications
Qualification took place in the ESL studio in the city of Katowice from June 9 to 12, 2016, and was carried out according to the Swiss system to three victories. All matches took place on the best of one system (the best on one map). According to the results of qualification, the 8 best teams got to the main tournament. [6]

Format
The tournament was held in two stages: the group stage and the playoffs.
The group stage was carried out according to the double elimination system (up to two defeats), all matches, except the last in the group, were played in the best of one format (the best on one map). The last match was held in the best of three format (the best on three maps).
The playoffs were played on the Olympic system in the best of three format (the best on three maps)
Teams in the playoffs receive the title "Legends", which gives them the right to speak in the next major . The remaining 8 teams receive a slot to participate in the closed qualification for the next major, bypassing the regional qualifications (minor tournaments).,
