2008 European Athletics Cup

The 29th European Athletics Cup was held on June 21–22, 2008 in Annecy, France, at the Park de Sport stadium. At the start of the Super League (the strongest division of the tournament), 8 of the continent's strongest national teams among men and women came out. For two days, the participants fought for team points in 20 athletics disciplines.

Competitions in the First League took place at the same time in Portuguese Leiria and Turkish Istanbul , and in the Second League in Estonian Tallinn and Slovak Banska Bistrita .

The European Cup was last held under its name and in a similar format. The next year he was replaced by the European team championship , and the system has undergone significant changes. In order to increase the entertainment of competitions, the European Athletics Association combined men's and women's counts, as well as made adjustments to the rules of individual disciplines. According to the results of the European Cup in 2008, the composition of the leagues of the new tournament was determined, for these purposes a combined rating was compiled among men and women.

Team Championship

The women's team of Russia for the 13th time won the European Cup - this figure was a record in the history of competitions. Thus, for 29 tournament draws, only three teams won the victory, East Germany / Germany, USSR / Russia and France.

a In September 2008, the French Athletics Federation disqualified Julie Culot for middle-distance running for three years. Her doping test of May 29, 2008 tested positive for testosterone . All performances of the athlete after this date were canceled, including third place in the 2008 European Cup in the 3000m race (9.04.39) [1] .
b A doping test of the Belarusian core-putter, Yulia Leontyuk , taken at the end of the competition, showed a significant excess of testosterone in her body. In accordance with the rules, the athlete was disqualified for two years, and her result in the European Cup (first place with an attempt at 19.43 m) was canceled [2] .
