Richard Simon singled out the New Testament Isagogics from the general Isagogics of the Holy Scriptures , it was a new approach to writing an introduction to the New Testament. [4] From this moment, a historical and philological analysis of the text of the New Testament began. [3] His works contain not only historical and other evidence, but they also set forth new hypotheses. These works, on the one hand, were directed against the Jesuits , and on the other, against the socialians . [4] His approach was criticized by a contemporary preacher, Jacques-Benigne Bossuet, for an overly rationalistic interpretation of Scripture .
In 1684, Richard Simon planned to publish an expanded polyglot based on the Walton , but the plans were never implemented [5]
In his book The Critical History of the New Testament Translations, 1690, he was the first scholar to point out that there are Latin versions of the Bible older than the Jerome Vulgate . In the same place, he argued that Peschitta is the oldest translation of the Holy Scriptures. This view prevailed in biblical studies until 1901 when this opinion is refuted FK Burkitt's [6] .
