Charles Richard Shyer ( born Charles Richard Shyer ; October 11, 1941 , Los Angeles , California , USA ) is an American filmmaker, screenwriter and producer. Known for the films “ Private Benjamin ”, “ Father of the Bride ”, “ Trap for Parents ”, “ The Story with a Necklace ”, “ Handsome Alfie, or What Men Want ” and others.

Biography
Born in 1941 in the family of Melville Scheyer (1895-1968), an American film director and screenwriter. [1] , one of the founders of the Directors Guild of America [2] , and his wife Lois (née Jones). He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles .
Scheyer began his career as an assistant to Harry Marshall and Jerry Belson on the set of the television series The Strange Couple. By the end of the 70s, Charles achieved the position of chief screenwriter and assistant producer of popular TV shows [3] . In 1977, he co-wrote the comedy action movie "The Cop and the Bandit, " starring Burt Reynolds . The very next year, he collaborated with Jack Nicholson , together with Alan Mandel writing the script for his film “ Heading South ” and received a nomination for the Screenwriters Guild Award for the script for “Family Doctor” Howard Ziff.
In 1980, Charles Scheyer was nominated for an Oscar for his work on the script for the comedy Private Benjamin . Four years later, he made his debut as a feature film director, filming The Irreconcilable Controversy with Ryan O'Neill , Shelley Long, and Drew Barrymore .
Personal life
Charles Scheyer was married four times. From 1980 to 1999, was married to Nancy Meyers . The couple had two daughters - Annie and Holly [4] [5] [6] . They also worked together on several movies.
