History
Blair Castle was built in a very strategic location - at the entrance to the Grampian Mountains , on the route north to Inverness . [one]
The construction of the fortress began in 1269 , it was then that John Comin, Lord Badenohom , began to build a castle on the land of Count Atoll when he was in a crusade . After the march, on his return, the earl complained about the violator to King Alexander III , who eventually helped the lord to conquer his land, and also gave to the earl the already completed castle tower. [one]
A significant expansion of the fortress was made by John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atoll , in 1530 . He began to build a new extension to the castle, which soon served his family as a large hall. [2]
In 1740, James Murray, 2nd Duke Atoll , began to transform the fortress from a medieval castle style to a castle of Georgian architecture . He hired Thomas Clayton to decorate the estate rooms with the finest plaster in Scotland and furnish them with furniture from the most famous cabinetmakers in Scotland. [2]
The fortification was protected by the Egnu clan for a long time, but the castle was besieged by the Jacobites during the Jacobite uprising of 1745-1746 . The fortress did not surrender to the besieging, even during the famine caused by a long siege, but in 1746 the defenders of the fortress celebrated victory, as the Jacobite army retreated to fight the forces of the British government at the Battle of Culloden . [one]
After the growing popularity of Scottish Baronial architecture, John James Hugh Henry Stuart-Murray, 7th Duke Atoll , commissioned Edinburgh architects David Bryce and William Burne to remodel the facade of the castle in the 1860s - 1870s . The battlements and gun turrets, which were demolished during the restructuring of the fortress under the Georgian style, were restored, and a new lobby was equipped and a ballroom was built. The fortress was also provided with all the latest scientific achievements, namely: baths, telephones and gas in almost all rooms of the estate. [2]
During World War I, the castle was used as an auxiliary hospital, and since 1922, the family has decided to disperse to different private apartments and ceased to live on the estate. [2]
