Minke whale [1] [2] [3] , or sharp-faced minke whale [2] [4] , or pointed-headed whale [4] , or sharp -headed whale [4] , or dwarf whale [4] - common names for two species of whales from the striped family, which until 2000 were considered by biologists as a single biological species of Balaenoptera acutorostrata :
- Balaenoptera acutorostrata - Northern Minke whale ;
- Balaenoptera bonaerensis - Southern Minke Whale .

In Russian-language literature published before 2000, all of the above names were used to designate both of these forms as a single species. In the early 2000s, the scientific committee of the International Commission on Whale Fishing (SC IWC) recognized southern minke whale as a separate species [5] .
