Biography
He was born into a family of Austrian citizens, revolutionaries Orest-Oktovian Martynovich Gabel and Augustina Stanislavovna Sinkevich, who, after being exiled to the Irkutsk province, were settled in Kharkov , where Orest Gabel soon joined the board of the Kharkov public library. The brother of Margarita Orestovna Gabel , literary critic.
In 1914 he graduated from Imperial Kharkov University . Left in alma mater , since 1923 - at the Institute of Applied Chemistry (since 1927 - head of the laboratory of the Central Chemical Laboratory of Ukrtabaktrest at the institute). In 1930-1935 - Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of Kharkov INO , since 1940 - Head of the Department of Organic Chemistry of Kharkov Medical Institute; simultaneously in 1944-1949 - Director of the Institute of Chemistry at Kharkov University, founder and head of the first in the USSR department of heterocyclic compounds.
In 1934 he received the academic title of professor, and in 1940 - the scientific degree of Doctor of Chemical Sciences after defending a dissertation in the chemistry of derivatives of barbituric acid. By this time, his textbook on the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds was published.
Secretary of the editors of the Ukrainian Chemical Journal. He gave popular lectures and worked as secretary of the Proceedings of the VI Mendeleev Congress.
He died in the prime of his scientific, pedagogical and social activities from a serious incurable disease.
He was buried at the Second City Cemetery of Kharkov. In 1998, his common grave, with his sister Margarita, was destroyed. It was later restored by the efforts of the public [1] .
Scientific activity
Studies in the field of chemistry of barbituric acid derivatives , the relationship of their structure with physiological activity; sulfonamide preparations.
Developed chemotherapeutic drugs, antibiotics . In 1947, under the leadership of Yu.O. Gabel, work began on the production of synthetic analogs of penicillin . He published a large review article on antibiotics, proposed their classification.
