Biography

Giovanni Giorgio Paleolog, son of the Monferrat Margrave Bonifacio III and Maria Brankovich , was born in Casale Monferrato on January 20, 1488.

Giovanni Giorgio was the second son of Boniface III and did not claim to be the Marquis. He devoted himself to a religious career, but was forced to become the guardian of Boniface IV after the death of his older brother Guglielmo IX . When Boniface IV died as a result of a fall from a horse on June 6, 1530 , Giovanni Giorgio becomes the last legitimate male heir to the throne of Montferrat.

Childless Gianggiorgio Paleolog began to look for an heir to the throne of Monferrat, as doctors predicted his death for several years due to an incurable disease of the digestive system . Marie of Monferrati , daughter of Guglielmo IX, who was married to the Duke of Mantua Federico II from the house of Gonzaga, was elected heir. However, Mary died suddenly [2] [3] .

At the same time, the right to inheritance began to be put forward by Francesco di Saluzzo , who was a relative of the Margraves of Monferrat, but was an ally of the French kingdom . The Dowager Margraine Anna invited the widowed son-in-law to marry the younger sister of his late wife. Thus, she hoped to protect the Margrave of Montferrat from encroachment by the French kingdom and the Duchy of Savoy after the death of Giovanni Giorgio [4] . The wedding took place in Casale on October 3 [5] (according to other sources , November 16 [6] ) 1531 .

In a desperate attempt to continue the male line of Paleologists, Gianjorgio accepts the imperial proposal to marry the already middle-aged Julia of Naples , daughter of the King of Naples, Federigo and Isabella del Balzo . The wedding took place on April 29, 1533. The next day, April 30, 1533, the Margrave died without having left a legitimate male offspring [7] .

Marriage and offspring

Giangiorgio Paleolog was married to Julia of Naples, they had no children.
